It comforts the soul and
warms the body. It muffles the noise, and accentuates the beauty of all it
touches. It adds all-important texture, yet smoothes the interruption from one
room to the next. Carpet makes the home.
For homes with awkward room flow, a single style and color of carpet used
throughout offers visual continuity. If you just can't make yourself choose
between different styles, choose them all, but keep them within the same color
family to minimize contrast.
If you're looking to create an entirely new look for a room, consider using patterned carpet, one of today's most fashion-forward flooring styles. You'll find patterns suitable for creating elegant settings, while others offer a more casual, relaxed atmosphere.
And if you are working with patterns, keep a few
thoughts in mind. Subtlety, for instance, is better achieved in carpet with low
color contrast between the pattern and background. Also, if your room already
contains several bold motifs or mixed patterns, select an undemanding carpet to
neutralize the overall pattern. In fact, a good general rule of thumb is to
always select a carpet pattern with a different scale than other prints in the
room. Too much of the same scale, whether in carpet and upholstery patterns, or
even in furniture size, grows tiring
to the eye.
For similar reasons,
you should also be careful to select carpet with a different motif than that of
the walls. Pairing stripes with stripes, or even flowers with flowers, can be
somewhat risky.
And finally, having said all that, the most important rule of thumb of all:
It's your home. It's your call.
